Do you know about “Setsubun”, the Japanese spring festival during which people celebrate the end of winter and try to get rid of any evil spirits and instead invite luck for the year ahead? This year, for the first time in the Reiwa era, the Shintencho Shopping Arcade, located in the heart of Tenjin, is holding a special festival for Setsubun. This festivity is mainly celebrated by a ritual in which roasted beans are thrown in order to drive out any evil spirits. Most Japanese have experienced this ritual, but this year, Shintencho is offering locals and visitors the chance to take part in “mame-maki” (the throwing of beans) from the top of an open-top bus! For the joy of young visitors, the cute and fun Nishitetsu Bus mascot, Bababasuo, will also make an appearance! Experience Japanese culture with a modern and fun twist for this Setsubun!
