Let’s have a look into Fukuoka’s art scene!


Although this edition’s topic is art, we decided to look a bit further into Fukuoka’s art scene than the usual art museums that will pop up first when you search for arty spots in this city. We selected a few special places that revolve around the topic ‘art’ in wide range of ways instead. If art is one of your interests, these spots are definitely worth the visit!  






This gallery is located in a business building in the middle of the lively Tenjin area.

You can enjoy art as well as shopping here!


This gallery has been offering a variety of exhibitions including modern art, design, fashion, pictures, architecture and more for several years now and is appreciated as a place where not yet established artist or pieces of work which are not necessarily compliant with a certain genre are introduced to art lovers.

▷②Gallery MORYTA



This gallery is a project by Morita, who was part of the committee and supervisor of the “ART FAIR ASIA FUKUOKA 2017”which was held in 38 rooms on one floor of the Okura Fukuoka Hotel.


The gallery is located in a beautiful alley in which about 100 Japanese zelkova are lined up.

This popular area is has lots of various shops and galleries.

This art space, which was once located close to the Kyushu Sangyo University, was originally established as place for this university’s art classes or for collecting the students’ works. 


The café next to it has a very unique atmosphere. You can spend hours here, just relaxing without thinking about the time. Take your time here to fully enjoy the art they have to offer.

This studio was created by the artists who reside here and is quite extraordinary. The former Mikiso housing complex was remodeled into a living and work space for artists from all over the country.


One of the special features of this studio is that, apart from exhibitions, they also hold workshops, talk shows, or other events depending on the currently residing artists.

This gallery holds joint as well as individual exhibitions including works of photography, design, illustration, pottery and crafts.  And, so far, they did not just hold typical gallery art exhibitions but also offered special events like ​meetings for reading research papers, apparel exhibitions, as well as their very own Lumo original exhibition, which incorporates their unique and free art concept.


Also, next to the gallery is a second hand book store called “LUMO books & works” which offers a unique variety of books dealing with art, design, culture and literature.

In this joint establishment, you will find TAGSTA coffee stand which is well-known for its exceptional drip coffee and espresso and the TAGSTA gallery in the back.


They handpick works by artists from Japan as well as overseas for their exhibition and also offer talks, reception parties and even live shows from time to time. How about enjoying art with a delicious coffee in one hand?

This art café is located in a quiet residential neighborhood in Ropponmatsu.

This studio was once the workplace and residence of the late painter Terada Kenichiro who was a representative Kyushu artist. It is said to have been a salon were many cultured people like artists, writers and actors gathered.

This art space was created by several, modern artists who all wanted to offer a cool place that focusses on radical avant-garde and hasn’t been seen in Fukuoka before.


Since this art space is jointly managed by photographers, artists, musicians, writers, freeters and philosophers, their projects and atmosphere cannot be compared to any other place.
