Part of the modern culture in Fukuoka is the rise of interest in coffee.
Fukuoka can be called the new city of coffee, and let us explain to you why:
The association “Specialty coffee” holds once a year a kind of athletic meet with trials in 8 different fields. Coffee people from all the country participates, and in 2014, 3 of these trials were won by people from Fukuoka working in the field of coffee ! These three people took part in the World Coffee Championship.
So this time, follow us through a local tour of Fukuoka’s best coffee. We have selected two different courses for this “make Fukuoka the best city for coffee” theme. In addition, we had the help of M. Koga, who is specialized in coffee (Here is the link to see his work:「Click Coffee Works（https://www.facebook.com/clickcoffeeworks/）
▷The friendly vicinity of Gion course
The first place we recommend is a coffee shop next to Joten-ji shrine, near the Gion subway station. It is a new shop, which opened in March 2016, called “Manu Coffee Joten-ji”. It is not easy to be allowed to use the name of the Joten-ji temple in your shop name, you can really feel by that its implication in the neighborhood.
In the back there is a sofa space where you can relax and take a rest. There is even a terrace with a brick wall that has been there since the Kamakura era (1185-1333)！！Being able to enjoy the taste of a good coffee surrounded by a historic atmosphere is really magical.
For our next shop, let’s roam through the Tocho-ji shrine, situated not far away from the previously mentioned Joten-ji shrine. It is near the main street, yet surprisingly calm.
It is forbidden to take pictures inside the Tocho-ji shrine but we do recommend that you visit the famous Hell and Heaven cave !!
It’s a pitch-dark experience, and it is very fun !
Finally, let’s take a look at D&DEPARTMENT FUKUOKA.
It’s a classy furniture shop where you can also order a nice cup of coffee. Before going to this shop, someone recommended to me the coffee jelly, which I thus ordered without any hesitation.
It is very fragrant and super easy to swallow, I really enjoyed it.
You can buy drip bags of each shop’s coffee, which make perfect souvenirs !

▷The seasonal atmosphere of the Maizuru park vicinity
Let’s start our course with a shop called MOMENT COFFEE.
the shop is decorated with seasonal flowers that do not wither.
The small interior and the friendly shop manager will without a doubt make you feel at home !
Next is the best spot in Fukuoka for a nice seasonal relaxing time : Maizuru Park.
I went just on time for the beginning of the sakura season.
There is, in front of the Fukuoka castle, a small lane, only opened to the public on Saturdays and Sundays.
It is probably a spot that not many people living in Fukuoka know about.
Writing paper and postcards, envelopes, you will find a lot of wonderful items for your written correspondence in this shop.
The shop next to it, LIFE IN THE GOODS is a shop which theme revolves around Japan itself.
Furniture and stationery、everything for your house can be found in this shop!
The view from both of the shops’ window is breathtaking.
And for the cherry on top, the exquisite coffee. The owner of the shop “Cafe Bimi” is called “the coffee god”, and he will religiously prepare you an amazing Nel drip filtered coffee. To me it did not feel like just a coffee, but thanks to the atmosphere I felt like I was sipping on a work of art.

▷Let’s roam the city along with coffee
Of course I understand that it might be quite difficult to drink that much coffee while strolling the city, so I recommend that you take one cup for take out, walk along the beautiful streets then take a break inside one of the shops and relax.
Fukuoka’s coffee has a very good reputation in the world. There are a lot of wonderful shops scattered everywhere in the city. Looking for them or just wandering in the hope of finding one is the best way to get to know the city in a local way. try it with your friends !
