“Toho Village: Welcome to the Village of Nature and Pottery”

I’m Vicky from SUiTO FUKUOKA and I would like to write about the Koishiwara spring ceramic festival that took place on May 3rd, 4th and 5th. I had the opportunity to join the event as a staff and interpreter for foreign tourists.

SUiTO FUKUOKA
First, let me tell you more about Koishiwara city located in Toho-mura district and surrounded by beautiful nature. The city is famous for its ceramic kilns and artists. It takes about 2 hours by train and 1 hour and half by bus from Fukuoka city.

At the moment there are about 50 potters in Koishiwara producing both Koishiwara and Takatori pottery. All potters have their own style and use different techniques such as chatter decoration, brush mark, combing, finger wipes, glaze pouring or glaze dripping.
During the festival, you can walk around the city with the help of a map to different pottery factories and shop for items reduced in price by 20% or more. Various workshops such as ceramics cup painting workshop are also available for a limited number of people per day. Finally if you are lucky enough, you’ll have time to buy “Pottery lucky bag” at some potter’s shops.
The city offers beautiful landscapes and you can enjoy both nature and pottery in the same time while strolling through the streets. If you are hungry, you can drop by the roadside station and buy some local products.

If you have time, you can enjoy others spots in the area such as terraced rice field; Iwaya Shrine; Arched bridges etc...
The next event of Koishiwara will take place in October so why not drop by if you are interested in pottery and nature.
